Background of the Study
In many developing regions, improving healthcare practices among mothers is essential for reducing maternal and child mortality rates. In Damaturu Local Government Area, Yobe State, continuing education programs have been introduced to empower mothers with up-to-date healthcare knowledge and practices. These programs are designed to provide practical training on nutrition, hygiene, antenatal and postnatal care, and disease prevention. By targeting mothers—who often serve as the primary caregivers in their communities—such initiatives have the potential to effect significant improvements in family health outcomes (Adamu, 2023). The curriculum often integrates modern medical guidelines with traditional practices, ensuring that the information is both culturally sensitive and scientifically sound. Recent advances in digital health education have also been incorporated, allowing for interactive learning experiences that are more engaging and accessible to mothers in remote areas (Bala, 2024). However, challenges such as low literacy levels, cultural barriers, and limited access to healthcare facilities can impede the successful implementation of these programs. Studies have demonstrated that mothers who receive continuing education are more likely to adopt improved healthcare practices and seek timely medical intervention, leading to better overall health for their families (Hassan, 2025). Furthermore, these programs also emphasize the importance of preventive healthcare, thereby reducing the incidence of common diseases and enhancing community well-being. By empowering mothers with the necessary skills and knowledge, the continuing education initiatives aim to foster a proactive approach to health management. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of these programs in improving healthcare practices among mothers in Damaturu. It will examine the program content, delivery methods, and the extent to which the training translates into practical behavioral changes. The findings are expected to provide valuable insights into how continuing education can be optimized to improve maternal and child health outcomes in Yobe State (Adamu, 2023; Hassan, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the implementation of continuing education programs aimed at improving healthcare practices among mothers in Damaturu, there remains a significant gap between program objectives and actual health outcomes. Many mothers, even after participating in training sessions, continue to adhere to traditional practices that may not align with modern healthcare standards. The limited practical application of the knowledge acquired during these programs is a major concern. Contributing factors include low baseline literacy levels, cultural resistance to change, and limited access to health facilities that can support the adoption of new practices (Bala, 2024). Furthermore, the lack of follow-up support and periodic refresher courses often results in the gradual erosion of the knowledge and skills imparted during the training sessions. This disconnect between educational interventions and tangible improvements in healthcare practices is particularly alarming in a region where maternal and child health indicators are already suboptimal. The problem is compounded by infrastructural challenges and inadequate health communication systems that further limit the reach and impact of the continuing education programs. Without a robust mechanism for reinforcing learned practices, the benefits of such initiatives remain underutilized. This study, therefore, seeks to investigate the underlying reasons for the limited success of these healthcare education programs and to identify strategies that can improve the translation of knowledge into practice. By addressing these issues, the study aims to propose actionable recommendations that will enhance the effectiveness of continuing education in promoting better healthcare practices among mothers in Damaturu (Adamu, 2023; Hassan, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the effectiveness of continuing education programs in improving healthcare practices among mothers.
To identify barriers that prevent the effective application of healthcare knowledge gained from the programs.
To recommend strategies to enhance the practical impact of healthcare education on maternal and child health.
Research Questions
How do continuing education programs influence healthcare practices among mothers in Damaturu?
What are the primary barriers to implementing improved healthcare practices?
What interventions can increase the practical application of healthcare education among mothers?
Research Hypotheses
H1: Continuing education programs significantly improve healthcare practices among mothers.
H2: Cultural and infrastructural barriers hinder the effective application of healthcare knowledge.
H3: Enhanced follow-up support and refresher courses will lead to sustained improvements in maternal health practices.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates the role of continuing education in improving healthcare practices among mothers, a critical factor in reducing maternal and child mortality. The insights derived will guide health educators and policymakers in refining training programs to better meet the needs of mothers in Damaturu, ultimately contributing to improved community health outcomes (Hassan, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to evaluating continuing education programs aimed at improving healthcare practices among mothers in Damaturu Local Government Area, Yobe State. It focuses on program content, delivery methods, and barriers to effective application without extending to other regions or broader health system reforms.
